Why do some heavy drinkers get cirrhosis while others don't?

Why do some heavy drinkers get cirrhosis while others dont?
I think the definition of “heavy” is probably important. I drink more than i should, but not heavily. But some folk might think how much I drink is heavy.

My mother drank like me. Slowly from afternoon to bedtime. Bedtime for her was 9ish. Like me.

She would start with a small beer, then have wine, sometimes a couple brandy's. Usually the full bottle wine. She didn't have a great diet as she had eating disorders her whole life but was never fat or overweight, didn't do exercise, never took drugs or smoked. Lots lots anger and stress though.

She literally was never ever ill. I think I remember a few colds, 1 day in bed, and nothing until her early 70s when she nearly died in a fall in her home. She died of a heart attack 2–3 yrs later. First and last of them. No liver issues. No cancer. Nothing.

I live a far healthier lifestyle, but have her drinking habit. With me it's Gin and tonic. Great diet. Lots exercise. Slightly less stress. More fresh air. Lots more water. Daily supplements. My liver is also fine according to annual tests. I thank my lucky stars that so far, coming up 45 I've has no serious illnesses. Couple little household accidents but no illnesses. Unless you count MH issues.
